PUBLIC HEARINGS (continued)

Item No.2 (continued)

the Architectural Committee established 15 feet for freestanding signs on
El Camino Real.

Vice Mayor Britschgi declared the public hearing open at 7:45 p.m.

Finn Arton, owner~ Peninsula MAZDA~ reported the the MAZDA company
requires dealers to replace old signs with the new logo. Mr. Arton said
that he needs a 351 freestanding sign for quick identification by prospec-
tive out-of-town buyers, noting that the present sign is that high.

-

Discussion followed and Mr. Arton and Mr. Schroeter commented and replied
to questions concerning the 35-foot general height limitation for signs
and the application of the Architectural Committee limitation of 15 feet
on El Camino Real; the fact that no new sign in the area has exceeded 15
feet for the past ten years; the height of other signs in the same
business area; whether desirable flexibility would be lost if an ordinance
containing rigid sign height limitations for different areas of the City
were adopted; the fact that the 15-ft. sign height limitation has been
accepted by businesses on El Camino Real and that more than 100 such signs
have been approved for the area in the past ten years; and the possible
need for higher signs along the freeway or where unusual conditions
prevail.

Gus Pappas~ 587 Seahorse Lane, aerodynamicist~ stated that the proposed
sign on a 35-ft. pole would require very expensive support in order to
accommodate wind velocity without toppling and recommended a 15-ft. sign
height limitation.

Discussion continued concerning whether a compromise with regard to height
is possible; the probable actions of other businesses on El Camino Real
with regard to increasing sign heights if a 35-foot sign is now permitted;
the relationship of the former Architectural Committee regulations to the
sign ordinance; and the present economic situation.

Nita Spangler~ Edgewood Road~ stated that considerable public money has
been spent recently to beautify El Camino Real and urged that the 15-ft.
height limit policy be retained there.

Vice Mayor Britschgi invited anyone else present who wished to speak to do
so.
