<br />i <br /> <br />1 <br />Park and Recreation Commission <br />Minutes of June 22, 2005 <br /> <br />pa ge 2 <br /> <br />In her presentation Ms. Freeman emphasized the department's desire to <br />have an impact on the health and wellness of the City and some initiatives <br />that are being put in place in order to achieve this goal including: changes to <br />vending machine offerings and snack food provided by our programs as well <br />as new classes such as a mommy and me cooking program. She shared her <br />demonstration of the amount of sugar found in various soft drink offerings as <br />well as statistics on childhood obesity. She noted that the brochure had <br />received an honorable mention at the Statewide California Parks and <br />Recreation Society annual conference; that her staff person was responsible <br />for the very successful picnic reservation program and her responsibility for <br />keeping up the Department page on the City website. <br /> <br />Director Centeno noted many of the activities of this section were supporting <br />established strategic plan goals and that the Department needed to continue <br />to embrace technology if we want to be able to serve more people with the <br />same number of employees. <br /> <br />ITEM 2 - PARK RULES - FEEDBACK ON IDENTIFIED ISSUES <br /> <br />Director Centeno shared the letter from Mrs. Travers providing suggestions <br />for the Park Rules discussion and updated the Commission on the status of <br />the staff's review of ordinances from various other cities and employee <br />comments. A copy of Mrs. Travers's letter is attached to the minutes. <br /> <br />ITEM 3 - 4TH OF JULY FLOAT - COMMISSIONER WHITE <br /> <br />Commissioner White reported that the sub-committee had met and shared a <br />proposed design for the float and a This Park Land is Your Land theme. <br />Commissioner Swope has submitted the application to the parade organizers <br />as well as the wording for the announcing station. Commissioner Joseph <br />asked that reference to the History Museum with donations be deleted and <br />Director Centeno suggested that a statement saying the Redwood City Park <br />and Recreation Commission was riding on the float be added. The <br />Commission agreed to the suggestions. Superintendent Hover explained how <br />staff would be involved and set a work time with the Commission for <br />Saturday, July 2nd at 10:00 a.m. at the Municipal Services Center. Lastly, he <br />indicated that he would be working with Parade organizers to secure an <br />appropriate float platform. <br /> <br />ITEM 4 - UPDATES <br />- Park Development Ordinance <br />Superintendent Hover provided an update on our progress in this area. <br />All areas have been inventoried, with a new layer being added to the City <br />GIS system, which allows for extremely accurate measurement of the <br />sites. Our next steps include going out to the Building Industry <br />Association and the Chamber of Commerce for feedback. Standard <br />recommendations should come back to the Commission in July and then <br /> <br /> <br />
