6. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS AND CONSENT CALENDAR - Janet Borgens expressed thanks regarding the Interservice Coordinating Council's Unsung Hero Awards ceremony in which 13 recipients received awards for dedication to this community. She stated that the servers neglected to show up and the City Council Members and City staff present at the event volunteered and served the lunches. She presented gifts of thanks to the Council and City staff for their effort and support. Susie Peyton, speaking as a board member of the Redwood City Education Foundation, thanked the City for co-sponsoring the upcoming community outreach event. The screening of the movie, "First to Worst", a documentary about the California education system over the last 30 years, is scheduled to be shown on November 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium at McKinley Middle School. Following the moYie, there will be a panel discussion with John Merrow, the maker of the movie; Delaine Eastin, Superintendent of Public Schools in California; Susan Sweeney, Director of California Education Foundations; and Dr. Kenneth Hill, Redwood City Superintendent of Schools from 1970-1990. The event is to be moderated by Mark Simon with other co-sponsorship by the League of Women Voters, the Chamber of Commerce and Assembly Member Ira Ruskin. She encouraged all to attend to understand who runs the schools, how they are financed, what the State is doing to change it, and what we can do as citizens to change it. Nita Spangler stated that she has been listening and seeking knowledge about what is being done toward disaster preparedness on the San Francisco Peninsula. She stated her belief that we should start talking right now about how important it is to stay home and mind one's own business or if one has a job to show up and do it; and exactly what we should have at home in case of a disaster. She requested that the City be proactive and make it a high priority. Council Member Foust stated that on November 12 at the San Mateo County fairgrounds a free emergency preparedness showcase will be conducted to all residents of the County from 10-2 p.m. It is designed to give every resident a better understanding of what each person should have on hand at home and business regarding emergency preparedness. She further stated that Council Member Bain has been working extensively with our Police and Fire Departments and different groups on this topic and is very dedicated to the issue. Council Member Bain stated that there is a Disaster Preparedness page on the City's website and he encouraged residents to take a look and he emphasized that this is a huge concern for the City. Charlene Wright stated that she, her husband and children attended the gang forum on Friday evening at Fair Oaks Community Center where they shared an enlightening conversation with the participants. She commended Malcolm Smith, the City Manager and Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center for their work.
