All rights reserved. <br />City of Davis: Overflow Emergency Response Plan C-1 <br />Side A Field Sampling Kit <br />Procedures for Sampling Receiving Waters and Posting Warnings after a Sewage Spill <br /> <br />Get Field <br />Sampling <br />Kit <br />Get ice pack from a <br />convenience store <br />and place in cooler <br />Determine point spill entered waterway <br />– photograph this location (include a <br />reference point in the photo) <br />Don the PPE <br />from the <br />Sampling Kit <br />•Collect all samples against the direction of the water flow! (face upstream) <br />•Collect upstream sample first! <br />•Collect samples well away from the bank (preferably where water is visibly flowing) and 6” below the surface <br />•Avoid sampling debris or scum layer from the surface. <br />•Photograph evidence of dead fish! <br /> <br />Move 50’ upstream of point where spill entered waterway (reference sample) <br />Take out the temp/pH meter. Calibrate it. Take temperature and pH of the water at that sample <br />location. Record those results on the chain of custody form. <br />Remove the seal from the enterococcus sample container (100ml) just prior to collecting your sample. <br />A chemical has been added to the sample container. Leave the chemical in the bottle and do not rinse. <br />1.Remove the cap immediately before collecting each sample. <br />2.Do not allow the inside of the cap to touch anything <br />3.Holding the bottle in one hand, face upstream and lower the bottle 6” below the water surface. <br />Then sweep the bottle upstream and out of the water. Be careful not to disturb the bottom <br />sediment. Pour a little water out so that bottle is filled to the line. Immediately replace the cap. <br />Open the ammonia-nitrogen sample container and follow collection process above (steps 1-3) to fill to <br />just below the neck of the jar. NOTE: The ammonia-nitrogen sample bottle contains sulfuric acid – <br />LEAVE THE ACID IN THE BOTTLE AND DO NOT ALLOW IT TO TOUCH YOUR SKIN! <br /> <br />Label all of the samples <br />with their location and note <br />the date and time collected <br />Place samples <br />in cooler on <br />the ice pack <br />Take a photo of this sample <br />location (include a reference <br />point in the photo) <br /> <br />Move at least 10’ downstream of point where spill entered <br />waterway and repeat sampling steps (red boxes) <br />Complete the Chain of Custody form from the <br />Sampling Kit. <br />Immediately contact: Bob Wandrow at South Bayside <br />System Authority Laboratory at (650) 868-6426 and <br />inform him that the following samples require <br />processing: Ammonia-Nitrogen and Enterococcus. SAMPLING STEPS Take cooler containing the samples and completed <br />chain of custody to South Bayside System Authority at <br />1201 Radio Road, Redwood City CA 94065. Samples <br />should be taken to lab within 6 hours of collection time. <br /> <br />Post warning signs as directed by the County Environmental Health Department or the Public Works Supervisor. <br />Remove warning signs and lift restrictions when authorized by County Environmental Health. <br />Repeat sampling daily from time the spill is known until the results of two consecutive sets of samples indicate the <br />return to the normal level or cessation of monitoring is authorized by the County Environmental Health Department. <br />6.2.A. - Page 161
