In addition to me~ting the requirements of AB 1298 By passing an ordinance, that
skaters must we~r the proper safety equipment, th~ Skate P~rk T~sk Force h~s
met over the past 14 months going over the ~esign, fundraising efforts and rules
and regulations for the new park. The Task Force reviewed the rules and
regulations from numerous municipalities throughout California. At the May 2002
Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting, the Task Force brought to the
Commission their recommendations for the rules and regulations of the Skate
Park, as well as the sample sign that will be posted at the site. The following is
what was presented and approved unanimously at that Commission meeting:

1. Skate Park Code of Conduct: Respect Yourself, Respect All
Skaters and Spectators, Respect the Park and the Community
2. All users are required to wear helmets, knee and elbow pads
(Ordinance 25:1.17)
3. Skateboards and Inline Skates only - No bicycles, BMX, or
scooters are allowed.
4. Vandalism and graffiti will not be tolerated. Protect your skate
park. Park will be subject to closure should incidents occur.
5. Skate Park Hours: Dawn to Dusk Daily
6. -Place trash in receptacles provided; no glass, food or drink allowed
in the skate park.
7. Additional obstacles or other materials (ramps/jumps, etc.) are not
allowed in the skate park.
8. Do not use this facility if a hazardous condition exits. Please report
any damage, vandalism, or hazardous condition to the City of
Redwood City Parks, Recreation and Community Services
Department, 780-7311 or 780-7250.
9. Must comply with posted park rules.
10. THIS IS A DRUG, ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO FREE ZONE
11. Skateboarding and in-line skating is listed as a hazardous
recreational activity. Any use of this facility is at your own risk.
The City of Redwood City does not assume any responsibility for
injuries.

Staff has concurred with the Skate Park Task Force that this facility does not
need to be supervised as there are many examples of successfully operated
facilities like this. The Skate Park Task Force believes that the more autonomy
and self-supervision the skaters have, the better the facility will be cared for.
Staff feels that since the Skate Park will be located in a highly visible location
within Red Morton Park, and that random checks on the Skate Park will be made
on a daily basis, there will be a department presence to effect any necessary
changes. We support the concept of starting off with the least restrictive means
and then creating more rules if needed.
