DOWNTOWN LIBRARY IMPROVEMENTS (83206)
FACILITIES
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This project includes several building enhancements or upgrades to
address public safety and security, as well as customer experience. The
Library is currently installing network wiring to support a security system,
but funds are still needed for installation of cameras and monitoring
equipment. The Downtown Library computer lab, one of the most heavily
used spaces in the building and one which focuses on underserved
populations, particularly the economically poor, needs work on
mechanical deficiencies (lighting and ventilation) as well as adapting the
space to accommodate evolving community technology needs like co‐
working and maker activities. In the rest of the building, new study
carrels are needed to replace heavily worn, decades‐old furniture that
lacks the built‐in electrical wiring needed for the growing number of
customers who utilize their own electronic devices. The population of
Redwood City, particularly downtown, has increased dramatically over the
30 years since the Downtown Library was built, and a study is required to
identify needs and opportunities for expansion of the current facility.

PROJECT BENEFITS
Enhances safety and security for the entire facility.
Improves customer experience in computer lab and for customers using their own devices.
Improves services to economically poor community members
Explores expanded spaces for library events and community use, as well as increasing efficiency and flexibility of
space for evolving community needs.
PROJECT STATUS
Previously funded exterior book drop replacement is complete. Security camera design is complete, awaiting funding.
Computer lab design will begin in spring 2018, additional funds needed for completion. Study carrels to be purchased this
year.
PROJECT SCHEDULE

Planning Design Construction
03/2018 04/2018 05/2018 06/2018 09/2018 10/2018

PROJECT ESTIMATES
BALANCE REQUESTED BUDGET 5 – Year Future
FUND As of
04/2018
2018/19 2019/20 2020/21 2021/22 2022/23 Total Years
357 $84,202 $75,000 $0 $100,000 $0 $0 $175,000
Total $75,000 $0 $100,000 $0 $0 $175,000
9.A - Page 44
