and not have to "passover" scheduled democratic process elections that are supposed to be "a
given" and a non-negotiable item. The majority on our 7 -member Council nonchalantly voted
themselves in another year. They did not have the judicial right to tamper with "the peoples' right
to vote".Thank goodness it was not a unanimous vote and some members on the Council voted
against it --thereby protecting democracy. But unfortunately, the majority prevailed and the
election was cancelled/postponed for that year ... thereby giving themselves an extra year in office
(an "unelected year"). It was a split vote. I thank the Councilmembers who voted to have the
election --though their votes were in the minority. For THIS ? we need a 7 -seat Council?
+2 5 The cost of 2 extra ppl is more than salaries, it's long term benefits. I heard $lm per person in
medical and pension-- is that true?
+2 S. This seems like a no brainer. We don't need 7 as evidenced by the other cities that manage
with S. Any cost savings no matter how small is a good thing.
+z 5 If San Mateo and Daly City (both larger than RC) can be effectively governed with 5, let's save
the money.
+z S. City council currently doesn't seem concerned for residents in terms of improving quality of
life, so reducing the diversity (from 7 to 5 members) shouldn't produce an adverse effect
+z 4 details on the affect to budget here would be quite helpful
+2 5 - Given the expense (some are which are lifetime), I would like to know why RWC thinks it
needs 7 when every other city in SMC gets by with five.
+2 5 - Yes, yes, yes. This will save the city thousands of dollars to help the budget without losing
firemen or police officers.
f 4, Redwood City is much larger and more diverse than many cities in the area.
R 5- there are many studies that say odd number is always preferred but that 5 is the optimal
number.
R 4. 1 don't think the city council fully represents the diversity of thought in the city. But, I don't
think having seven members is working to get us that diversity. The position seems to self-select
like minded people. Also, more councilmembers means more debate and less action.
Number five good idea
