6.1.A. - Page 1 <br />REPORT <br />To the Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />From the City Manager <br />June 11, 2018 <br />SUBJECT <br />Agreement for Service between the City of Redwood City and the Sequoia Union High <br />School District <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />By motion, approve and authorize the City Manager to execute a contract between the <br />City and the Sequoia Union High School District in the amount of $30,000 to partially <br />offset the cost of providing a School Resource Officer four days a week at Sequoia High <br />School for the school year 2018-2019 <br />BACKGROUND <br />Beginning in the fall of 2000, the Redwood City Police Department has provided a <br />School Resource Officer four days per week (40 Hours) at Sequoia High School <br />pursuant to a contract with the Sequoia Union High School District (SUHSD). This <br />position is funded on a partnership basis with the police officer's salary being partially <br />supported by the school district for the nine months school is in session. The School <br />Resource Officer has been involved in a variety of activities that enhance the safety on <br />campus and provide a positive police presence for the students and staff. The school <br />staff and teachers are able to utilize the officer for resolving any issues that arise on <br />campus. The officer helps supervise sporting events and attends other school functions <br />that allow for interaction with students in a positive manner. <br />The School District has requested an officer for the 2018-2019 school year. The <br />contract covers the period from July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019. The cost, including <br />salary and benefits, for the nine months of service is approximately $205,000.00. By <br />mutual agreement, the Sequoia Union High School District will make a single payment <br />of $30,000.00 to partially offset the cost of providing an officer. Existing police personnel <br />resources are being utilized to provide this service and the officer position already exists <br />in the Police Department's budget. <br />ANALYSIS <br />The partnership between Sequoia High School and the Police Department has been <br />highly successful.
