ShotSpotter Flex REDWOOD CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT 1
DETECT . PROTECT • CONNECT
Introducti0n
It has been SST's honor to serve the Redwood City Police Department in its gun violence reduction
efforts and we are pleased to present the following 2018 ShotSpotter Flex renewal proposal for the City's
approximately 0.25 square mile portion of the coverage area currently deployed in San Mateo County and
Redwood City.
In 2017, 52 gunfire incidents were detected in the combined San Mateo County and Redwood City
coverage areas. Nationwide, on average, less than 20% of shooting incidents are reported. As a result, 8
out of 10 times that someone fires a gun in vulnerable neighborhoods, the police are unaware of the
incident and therefore do not respond. This lack of a precise, fast, and consistent response to gunfire
creates an environment where gun violence becomes normalized, along with burdensome health, socio-
economic, and psychological costs for impacted communities. Using the ShotSpotter real-time gunfire
alerts, the Redwood City PoliceDepartment can effectively respond to gunfire, disrupting the gun
violence cycle, deterring further incidents, and build community trust in the process. We are proud to be
part of your ongoing efforts to make Redwood City Police a safer place to live, work, and visit, and we
look forward to contributing to further crime reductions. To that end, the following renewal proposal is for
the requested additional three-year subscription for the City's portion of the coverage area (we are
working in parallel with San Mateo County to renew their subscription for their portion of the coverage
area).
REV: 06-18-19 MI
ATTY/AG R.2018.131 /ShotSpotter
