programs for children; and maintaining local library hours/programs by <br />establishing a 0.5% sales tax, providing approximately $8,000,000 <br />annually until repealed by voters, with exemptions for essential purchases <br />like food/medicine, annual audits and all funds staying in Redwood City, <br />be adopted? <br />Measure Overview <br />The ballot measure under consideration has the following key components: <br />• Local half -cent sales tax for general city purposes. <br />• All funds generated by the measure would be placed in the General Fund to <br />be used for the provision of City services. <br />• All funds would be included in the City's annual independent audit by a <br />certified public accountant. <br />• All revenue would go to provide local services; it could not be taken by the <br />State. <br />• A simple majority vote is needed for adoption (50% + 1 vote) <br />Next Steps <br />To proceed, the City Council must call for an election on the measure, including the <br />ordinance establishing the tax, to be approved by Redwood City voters. The proposed <br />resolution would submit the ordinance as written, and calls for the measure to be <br />submitted to the voters of the City at an election to be held on November 6, 2018. <br />The proposed resolution also directs the City Attorney to prepare the impartial analysis <br />and authorizes the Mayor to select such persons as necessary to sign the ballot <br />arguments in favor of the proposed ordinance on behalf of the City Council. The <br />argument may be signed by up to five people and may be any combination of members <br />of the City Council, authorized representatives of bona fide associations, or individuals <br />eligible to vote on the measure. An argument authorized to be filed on behalf of the City <br />Council will receive priority in selection by the City Clerk for inclusion in the voter <br />information guide, if more than one argument were filed.
