I am a renter living in Redwood City, and I implore you not to ban people from multiple
families from living together in "single family houses." We have a massive housing crisis
here in the Bay, and for young people like myself, pooling resources together to collectively
rent a house is often one of the only ways we can afford to live here. It may not be an ideal
arrangement, but it's one borne of necessity, and it offers an efficient way to make the most
of our limited housing stock.
If we really do want to prevent people from different families from living together in a
single family house, the correct solution isn't to ban the practice but to fix the core problems
that forced this situation. Allow property owners to build duplexes or triplexes on their lots
so they can increase the housing stock themselves. Make further investments in public
transit and bike lanes so newcomers don't feel the need to own a car that requires parking
and contributed to congestion. But simply banning the rentals amounts to saying that if you
aren't rich enough, you can't live here.
Sabeek Pradhan
