Brief History & Description of Agency: ~if:Y ol!ß!!wood City

The Core Purpose of the City of Redwood City is:

Build a Great Community TofJether
This simple statement contains a great deal of meaning: it points to the need for engaging our
citizens in an effort to create a true community; a community where there is a "sense of
belonging," a place where there is trust and relationships among our citizens, and where people
know their neighbors. A community is a place where citizens take the responsibility and
accountability to partner with the City to achieve our mutual vision ofa great community.

To carry out our Core Purpose, the following four Core Values guide our day-to-day work, and
help us focus on our Core Purpose:

Excellence: Passion to Do Our Best in Each Moment
Integrity: Do the Right Thing, Not the Easy Thing
Service: We Care and It Makes a Difference
Creativity: Freedom to Imagine and Courage to Act

Under today's stresses and pressures of making ends meet in a time of declining revenues, we
sometimes risk losing sight of our purpose and values. However, City Manager Ed Everett points
out, "As we navigate our way through these very difficult financial straits, it's even more
important that our decisions, especially the tough decisions, really reflect our values and purpose.
This will serve us well in making the right decisions, in respecting our customers and each other,
and in preparing for the future. "

It is Redwood City's belief that quality recreation and community services should be made
available to people of all backgrounds, cultures, and lifestyles by providing accessible progressive
programs, building strong partnerships, integrating social services and resources, assessing
community needs and offering a safe and welcoming environment.

The Accessible Recreation Activities Program (ARAP) had been providing recreational activities
for those with physical and/or developmental disabilities for the past 20 years. Following through
with Redwood City's ideals, our primary goal at ARAP is to enable these individuals to have
meaningful, productive, and most importantly fun recreational experiences.

ARAP participants range from age 14 and up and are typically mildly independent. Some live on
their own, others with their parents, and many live in group homes. For all our participants, we
offer an opportunity to work on physical, social and life skills in a fun, safe and comforting
environment. We strive to create an environment in which all can succeed. Current AMP
programs include art, drama, and fitness classes along with bi-monthly theatre trips, weekend
fitness adventures and a wide range of other special events.

......
