APPENDIX <br />Precedent Studies <br />V PRECEDENT STUDIES <br />PROJECT 03: Emerald Necklace, Boston, MA <br />Size <br />1,100 Acres <br />Park Design <br />The Emerald Necklace is a chain of parks linked by waterways and parkways. <br />Each park was designed around its special qualities such as waterways, <br />botanical gardens, peaceful meadows, and tree museums. This lends to the <br />idea that each park is a unique 'jewel' in the Emerald Necklace. <br />Connectivity <br />A series of small parks were built connected by greenways that allowed city <br />residents to travel for miles surrounded by greenery and regain contact with <br />the natural world. The linked parks filled a need for the entire city, rather than <br />just the neighborhoods closest to a large central park. <br />PROJECT 04: Guadalupe River Park, San Jose, CA <br />Size <br />3 Mile Greenway <br />Park Design <br />Guadalupe River Park was designed for passive recreation including biking, <br />walking, hiking trails, public art, and festivals. It connects visitors with nature, <br />provides open space, and restores ecology. <br />Connectivity <br />The park is part of the Countywide Trails Master Plan that aims to create a <br />larger regional trial system including Bay Area Ridge trail and SF Bay Trail. <br />The park trail is used by commuters and links to Diridon Station. A future <br />goal is to develop outlying blocks in downtown San Jose and create stronger <br />connections between the city and the river. <br />24 SEPTEMBER 2018 119 <br />
