REPORT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager

October 1, 2018

SUBJECT
Resolution approving the temporary street closures for the October 28, 2018
OktobeRun event

RECOMMENDATION
Adopt a resolution designating the event route for the October 28, 2018 OktobeRun
event sponsored by the Redwood City Education Foundation and approving the
temporary partial closure of the streets along the route as represented on the
accompanying map

BACKGROUND

The Redwood City Education Foundation, hereafter “Foundation”, has held a half
marathon and 5 kilometer (5K) run in Redwood City annually in October since 2011.
The Foundation desires to continue the tradition of an annual half marathon and 5K run,
known as the “OktobeRun”, as it continues to generate interest in the health and fitness
of Redwood City residents. The event is proposed on Sunday, October 28th, 2018. The
event is a fundraiser for the Redwood City Education Foundation. The Foundation has
been working since 1983 to advance and enrich educational opportunities for the
8,000+ K-8 students of the Redwood City School District.

ANALYSIS
It is anticipated that upwards of 1,500 runners will participate in the OktobeRun this
year. California Vehicle Code Section 21101(e) authorizes the City to temporarily close
a portion of any street for a local special event when the local authority determines the
closure is necessary for the safety and protection of persons who are to use that portion
of the street during the temporary closing.

The OktobeRun will start and finish at Bradford St. and Main St. The Foundation will
have several health and wellness-related booths on Bradford St. before and after the
run. The Downtown district is within walking distance of 750 Bradford St., and the
Foundation plans to recommend the race participants patronize Redwood City
businesses after the event.
6.3.A. - Page 1
