REPORT <br />To the Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />From the City Manager <br /> <br />October 1, 2018 <br /> <br />SUBJECT <br />Resolution approving the temporary street closures for the October 28, 2018 <br />OktobeRun event <br /> <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />Adopt a resolution designating the event route for the October 28, 2018 OktobeRun <br />event sponsored by the Redwood City Education Foundation and approving the <br />temporary partial closure of the streets along the route as represented on the <br />accompanying map <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br /> <br />The Redwood City Education Foundation, hereafter “Foundation”, has held a half <br />marathon and 5 kilometer (5K) run in Redwood City annually in October since 2011. <br />The Foundation desires to continue the tradition of an annual half marathon and 5K run, <br />known as the “OktobeRun”, as it continues to generate interest in the health and fitness <br />of Redwood City residents. The event is proposed on Sunday, October 28th, 2018. The <br />event is a fundraiser for the Redwood City Education Foundation. The Foundation has <br />been working since 1983 to advance and enrich educational opportunities for the <br />8,000+ K-8 students of the Redwood City School District. <br /> <br />ANALYSIS <br />It is anticipated that upwards of 1,500 runners will participate in the OktobeRun this <br />year. California Vehicle Code Section 21101(e) authorizes the City to temporarily close <br />a portion of any street for a local special event when the local authority determines the <br />closure is necessary for the safety and protection of persons who are to use that portion <br />of the street during the temporary closing. <br /> <br />The OktobeRun will start and finish at Bradford St. and Main St. The Foundation will <br />have several health and wellness-related booths on Bradford St. before and after the <br />run. The Downtown district is within walking distance of 750 Bradford St., and the <br />Foundation plans to recommend the race participants patronize Redwood City <br />businesses after the event. <br />6.3.A. - Page 1
