98
Page 6
Peninsula Traffic Congestion Relief Alliance
2005 Redwood City Shuttle Sunrey
Background
The Peninsula Traffic Congestion Relief Alliance (the Alliance) is San Mateo County's
Transportation Demand Management Agency. Its mission is to reduce the number of
single occupant vehicles traveling in, to and through San Mateo County, reducing vehicle
emissions resulting in improved air quality.
A part of the Alliance's Work Plan is to assist cities who may require study of and
implementation of commute alternative programs to reduce traffic congestion based upon
the city's specific transportation needs. To evaluate commute alternative needs for the
City of Redwood City, the Alliance brought together a group of interested Redwood City
staff persons and citizens (stakeholder group) to determine how best to implement a
commute alternative program in the City of Redwood City which eventually resulted in
this shuttle survey report.
The stakeholder group met several times prior to the survey being conducted. A list of
the stakeholder group members is attached. This stakeholder group provided feedback
for the survey questions and how the surveys were to be distributed.
Some of the key comments provided by the stakeholder group included ensuring that
individuals from specific groups such as youth, the Senior community, local residents
who are employed and local residents who are not fluent in English would be included to
provide their transportation needs as a part ofthe survey report.
This Redwood City Shuttle Survey was conducted through a variety of channels
including local businesses and their employees. The stakeholders hoped to understand
transportation needs not just of the residents, but of commuters to jobs in Redwood City.
The survey was provided both electronically and as a regular paper survey (with business
reply postage paid included). The survey was made available in English and in Spanish
both online and as a paper survey, The survey was conducted in late 2005 and early 2006.
To encourage participation, survey respondents were entered into a raffle to win a $50
gift certificate to Target (two gift certificates were available) and also were entered to win
a $10 gift certificate that can be used for Redwood City Parks and Recreation classes (50
gift certificates were available).
2
~- ---...- ~._-- .~~_..- -'-'- -....--. - -
