The locations along the shuttle route should most likely include
the Redwood City Caltrain station, the Sequoia Shopping Center, the Downtown/City
Hall area, Kaiser Hospital and perhaps the Red Morton Community Center. However, as
indicated by the respondents travel time is also a factor is taking the shuttle, so the total
time needed to take the shuttle from one point to another must be considered.
The shuttle may need to have a schedule that includes early morning travel to the
Redwood City Caltrain Station from the Red Morton Community Center and Sequoia
hospital areas where many respondents live. These include those who are employed full-
time traveling to a close by city. From there, during the morning hours/ the shuttle could
travel to Sequoia Station Shopping Center and to City Hall/Downtown for those
employed in the Downtown area or for local residents who need services in and around
the Downtown area, to Kaiser Hospital and to Red Morton Community Center.
Respondents had also indicated a need for shuttle service in the mid and late aftemoon,
between 2:00 p.m. - 6;00 p.m. Over 32% of the respondents are either students or
Seniors. Perhaps the shuttle could be used to stop at or near Sequoia High School (as this
included more than 12% of the total respondents) and to Red Morton Community Center
for after school activities (as well as to the other locations mentioned previously).
The possibility of charging riders a fare of up to $1.00 may help offset the cost of shuttle
service. Other funding opportunities can also be explored to help defray the cost of the
shuttle service. Currently, the City/County Association of Governments of San Mateo
County's Congestion Relief Funding provides for a 50% match of funding for shuttle
service, for example.
With the addition of the new Downtown Retail/Cinema Project nearing completion, the
shuttle survey results were timely as they already indicate a need for service to the
Downtown area. Demand for alternative transportation service can only increase once
this project is completed.
The Peninsula Traffic Congestion Relief Alliance can assist the City of Redwood City to
explore these funding options and plan and implement a shuttle route if the City
determines it is feasible.
14
"-"-- ----- ---------...- ---~- ----- --- -- -
