CLK-Pamela Aguilar
''rom:
.lent:
Saturday, February 9, 2019 11:42 AM
To:
Council -Ian Bain
Cc:
Council -Diane Howard; Council -Alicia Aguirre; Council -Janet Borgens; Council -Shelly
Masur; Council-Giselle Hale; Council -Diana Reddy; MGR -Melissa Stevenson Diaz; CLK-
Pamela Aguilar; GRP -City Council
Subject:
7B Public Hearing #3 District Elections
Honorable Mayor Bain and Members of the City Council,
I have been reading about how other jurisdictions have created district elections. One
model that we might consider is creating 3 districts within Redwood City and having
the 3 top -vote getters in each district hold office. There would then be a 9 person
council. This model would still ensure diversity and candidates would still have lower
costs because they would need fewer votes to win. But this model would also allow for
competitive races and ensure that issues are addressed in the best interests of all
residents, not just residents in one area or another. Since we are now in the early
stages of considering district elections, perhaps this model should be included in the
conversation and studied a bit more.
Zespectfully submitted,
Kaia Eakin
Redwood City Resident
