CATALYJT
Zack, Downtown Redwood City Connective Elements, 26 October 2004, page 2 of 5
- signs directing drivers exiting US 101 to the downtown from Veteran'slWoodside,
W oodsidelBroadway, and Veteran 'slWhipple intersections.
- Secondary Gateways (signs or markers) indicating entry to the downtown core (with
the Broadway arches being the Primary Gateways)
- signs directing people to six key destinations: County Center, Courthouse, Theater
District, City Hall, Library and CalTrain Station.
- signs identifying city and other public parking facilities (e.g. communicating that the
County Center parking structure is available for free public use in the evenings)
This project is being undertaken within a larger context of the redevelopment of downtown
Redwood City. Key redevelopment efforts include the new multiplex cinema project currently
under construction, and a new civic plaza in front of the historic Courthouse. You will provide us
with supporting documents of these projects to inform our work and ensure its consistency with
other downtown improvements. We also understand that you have a budget of approximately
$350,000 for streetscape and pedestrian improvements for Middlefield between Veteran's and
Broadway, also known as Thaerter Way II, and $250,000 for the Downtown Wayfinding sign
program. Our recommendations and designs will be scaled to meet your budget.
Work Plan.
Our work plan takes an integrated approach to the project, developing the Connective Elements in
parallel with the Wayfinding and Sign elements, and bringing them together for integrated
meetings and presentations (see diagram). In developing the wayfinding and sign program, we
propose that Von Kohorn & Kitzmiller Signmakers of Redwood City be our subconsultant for
design of specific sign elements.
MEETING!
