CLK-Pamela Aguilar
From: CD -Lindy Chan
Sent: Monday, February 25, 2019 8:35 AM
To: CLK-Pamela Aguilar; CLK-Lupe Marin
Subject: FW: Bike and Ped. Safety Improvement Plan
Public comment for tonight's Council meeting on ECR
From: John Langbein [mailto:john_langbein@yahoo.comj
Sent: Sunday, February 24, 2019 4:16 PM
To: GRP -City Council <council@redwoodcity.org>
Cc: GRP-ElCaminoPlanning <elcaminoplan@redwoodcity.org>
Subject: Bike and Ped. Safety Improvement Plan
Redwood City Council --
I am in favor of making improvements on EI Camino to enhance bicycle safety between Maple and
Charter. From where I live, near Selby Lane School in Redwood City, the segment between Charter and
Maple provides a very safe and convenient route for me to cycle to downtown Redwood City. (I would ride
via Selby Lane to Oakwood, Cypress, and Center.) I would hope that the City work with Caltrans to
provide additional bike enhancements for one more block to Center across from the Target shopping
center.
As someone who has been actively cycling for > 50 years, I do have some reservations about wisdom
protected bike lanes. Do they really provide enhanced safety, or do they provide a perceived sense of
safety to a novice cyclist and/or to the non -cyclist? For instance, at intersections with additional barriers,
do they really prevent the "right -hook" type of crash? And, although there is considerable effort in
redesigning intersections, how do protected bike lanes work with the numerous driveways as each
driveway is a source or "sink" for a turning motor vehicle? I don't have the answers as I have had only
minimal experience with protected bike lanes.
So, in short, I'd like to see protected bike lanes on ECR with the hopeful expectation that these lanes will
increase the bicycle traffic on ECR and contribute to the decreasing our reliance on the motor vehicle. But,
if protected lanes become too controversial, I'd like to see Class 2 bike lanes on ECR — That to me would
represent a significant enhancement such that I would use the facility.
John Langbein
Redwood City, CA
