-

for recreation, informal meetings, and gathering.
The special purpose accessory structure is locat-
ed on the eastern edge of this area, containing a
cafeteria, assembly, recreation, and other support
uses. It has a good view of the central quad, and
its placement in front of the parking structure
shields the parking structure from the quad area.
Another open space to the west of the central
quad is a further extension of the open area,
enlarging the existing common area walkway.
It differs from the central quad in that it is planted
with an informal arrangement of trees, which cre-
ates open spaces of various sizes, allowing for a
more intimate setting. It borrows from the
already existing circular geometries and com-
pletes a space which makes a focus for all of
Redwood Shores. The central area establishes
a connection to the significant water feature and
common area to the west, while a medium-sized
open space acts as a foyer between this area and
the central quad.

Common area walkways link the larger open
spaces to each other, and also link the campus to
surrounding amenities. They are lined with alleys
of trees, to make a pleasant, shaded pedestrian
environment. A common area walkway runs east-
west across the campus, linking the western por-
tion of the Shores Center, the central quad and
the neighborhood to the east. A second common
area extension leads from the central quad, north-
ward to the Redwood Shores Lagoon. A third
common area extension provides a landscaped
corridor between the gateway building and the
central park area connecting Shores Center to
the proposed shopping center to the south.
Another common area walkway leads from
Shoreline Drive on the north to the Pacific Athletic
Club and proposed shopping center on the south.

'.

--

Parking is provided for in structures and land-
scaped surface lots for each phase. Three park-
ing structures have been placed within the overall
composition of buildings to relate to the different
parcels, with each serving no more than two build-
ings. This placement will provide the required
parking within a short walking distance of the
building entrance. In addition, special care has
been taken to minimize the visual impact of both
garages and surface lots to the Redwood Shores
Parkway. This was done by setting the parking
structures well within the campus, by landscaping
the lots with tree orchards to screen cars, and by
surrounding the roadway edge of the campus with
an informal arrangement of trees. Parking for
each phase is generally consistent with the City's
maximum parking requirement of 3.3 stalls per
1,000 square feet of GBFA, but the Master Plan
permits modify the parking as may be appropriate
based on traffic. demand management programs
and other approved efforts to reduce commuter
traffic demands in the Redwood Shores area.8

/

8 See tn. 2 for the definition of the term 'Gross Building
Aoor Area' (GBFA).

EXH I B.IT H

K2.

E
