<br /> Purchase of three 2007 Toyota Prius Hybrid Sedans
<br /> Recommendation
<br /> By motion, authorize the purchase of three Toyota Prius Hybrid Sedans in the amount
<br /> of $80,901.48 from Toyota 101 of Redwood City, CA.
<br /> Background
<br /> The Public Works Services Department, in conjunction with intemal customer
<br /> departments developed vehicle specifications for the scheduled replacement of two
<br /> existing vehicles and the approved purchase of one additional vehicle for the City's
<br /> Fleet. The purpose of the additional vehicle is for an additional code enforcement
<br /> position approved by the City Council in the Fiscal Year 2006/07 budget.
<br /> The City Clerk advertised the bid invitation with copies of the bid being mailed to eight
<br /> vendors including one local dealership. The one bid received was opened by the City
<br /> Clerk on July 19, 2006 and is summarized as follows:
<br /> Toyota 101 Redwood City, CA $80,901.48
<br /> Staff called some of the dealerships that did not respond and received the same
<br /> response from each: The Toyota Prius is in such high demand they are reluctant to offer
<br /> discounts on competitive bids,
<br /> The low bid from Toyota 101 represents a per unit fleet cost of $26,967.16 which is
<br /> $1,236.29 below current market retail value. Staff considers their bid to be a good and
<br /> responsive bid.
<br /> The Toyota Prius received one of the highest "green scores" for energy efficiency. The
<br /> green score is a numeric value of the vehicle's environmental friendliness. It is not
<br /> based solely on fuel economy, but also incorporates tailpipe emissions and emissions of
<br /> gases that cause global warming.
<br /> Alternative
<br /> Currently the two existing vehicles assigned to Fire prevention which are scheduled to
<br /> be replaced have met and or exceeded their useful life cycle. It would not be
<br /> economically sound to invest in the continued use and repair of these vehicles if they
<br /> were to experience a major breakdown due to their age and condition.
