<br /> 78 <br /> Page 1 <br /> REPORT <br /> To the Honorable Mayor and aUy Council <br /> From the City Manager <br /> August 7, 2006 <br /> Subject <br /> Transportation Study Session <br /> Recommendation <br /> Receive updated information on three transportation topics and provide direction to staff. <br /> Background <br /> Staff has compiled updated information on the following transportation topics: <br /> 1. Downtown and the transportation systems that support it. The attached white paper <br /> compiled by Bruce Liedstrand provides background information for future <br /> community I Council decisions. A short companion memorandum by Joel Patterson <br /> is also provided. No action is required or anticipated at this juncture. However, <br /> Council discussion and an indication of what will be helpful to Council as next steps <br /> is encouraged. <br /> 2. State Highway 101 and Route 84 (Woodside Road) interchange. For some time, <br /> the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has been studying <br /> alternatives for improving the performance ofthis interchange, in collaboration with <br /> The San Mateo County Transportation Authority and the City of Redwood City. <br /> While there is not a lot of new information at hand, the attached summaries of two <br /> alternatives and the estimated timeline for next steps will provide the Council with a <br /> non-technical overview. <br /> 3. Uncontrolled intersections and policy for consideration of stop or yield signs. Staff <br /> recommends the current policy for stop or yield signs at uncontrolled intersections. <br /> This report is a follow up on a matter discussed at the May 8, 2006 Council meeting, <br /> regarding uncontrolled intersections in the City (no stop or yield signs in any <br /> direction), and policy for consideration of stop or yield signs at such locations. <br /> The intent of this study session is to share what is known, highlight what is not known (or <br /> decided) within the regional systems included in numbers 1 and 2 above, and listen to <br /> Council's needs as these efforts move ahead. Item number 3 asks the question, does the <br /> Council wish to change current policy related to uncontrolled intersections? <br /> Alternative <br /> The Council could provide a range of alternative directions to staff, based on the <br /> information presented, current status of commitments and actions, and publiC input. <br /> Page 1 of 2 <br /> - ,-, <br />
