Caltrain presently has two tracks through <br /> Redwood City, but SamTrans1 is studying whether to expand to three or four <br /> tracks to accommodate increased train frequencies and speed and the possibility <br /> of High Speed Rail. Increasing the number of tracks in downtown is likely to <br /> require some expansion of the existing ROWand take developable land from <br /> adjacent parcels, including the City's Block 2, which is currently used for parking <br /> but has development potential. Caltrain is also studying moving the Redwood <br /> City CaItrain station across Broadway to the area adjacent to the Perry Street <br /> parking lot, as SamTrans controls a greater width of ROW at that location. City <br /> staff has told SamTrans staff that at least one functioning entrance to the station <br /> needs to be in the present station area in order to preserve Caltrain service in the <br /> heart of Downtown. <br /> SamTrans is conducting a "Footprint Study" to evaluate the ROW needs and the <br /> station location. Redwood City needs to work closely with SamTrans to make <br /> sure the results of that study meet Redwood City needs as well as SamTrans <br /> operational needs. <br /> High-Speed Rail <br /> A High-Speed Rail system with electric powered high-speed trains operating at <br /> speeds up to 220 mph has been proposed to allow travel from San Francisco to <br /> Los Angeles in just under 2 112 hours. The 700-mile long system would stretch <br /> from San Francisco, Oakland and Sacramento in the north, through the Central <br /> Valley, to Los Angeles and San Diego in the South. It is projected to carry at least <br /> 32 million intercity passengers annually and to serve another 10 million <br /> 1 SamTrans operates Caltrain and coordinates the work of other entities such as the Joint Powers <br /> Board. The term "Sam Trans" is used here to refer all the agencies involved in Caltrain. <br /> -4- <br /> - - <br />
