Issue #35-2002 <br /> <br />LEAGUE ANNUAL CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS II q3RTN rr ISSUES FOR CALIFORNIA CITIES <br /> <br /> The League of California Cities' 104~ Annual Conference is fast approaching October 2-5, 2002 at the Long Beach <br />Convention Center. The new structure of this year's conference allows for more discussion and sharing of expertise among <br />the many city officials expected to attend the four-day event. <br /> <br /> Housing for Californians, homeland security, balancing economic growth and the environment, technology in today's <br />government, and ethics for public officials are among the many important topics that attendees will deliberate in general <br />sessions. Participants can also join some of the nearly 50 workshops covering city issues from achieving fiscal stability, to <br />smart growth and labor relations programs. Other topics include racial profiling, transportation developments, and building <br />credibility and trust in communities. <br /> <br /> Well-known public figures expected to make presentations include: actor and activist Arnold Schwarzenegger about <br />Proposition 49; musician Peter Yarrow of Peter Paul and Mary fame; Henry Cisneros, former Secretary of Housing and Urban <br />Development; Josh Filler, White House Office of Homeland Security; Mark Baldassare, Public Policy Institute; U.S. Treasurer <br />Rosario Matin; Howard Rheingold, author of "The Virtual Community"; Rushmore Kidder of the Institute for Global Ethics; <br />and a special presentation by renowned author, speaker and futurist, Ray Bradbury. Early indications are that Republican <br />gubernatorial candidate, Bill Simon, is also expected to speak.
