His presentation on ftThe Boomers and the Next 20 Yearsft presented a very detailed
picture of how boomers are impacting society by their transition from midlife to later life. The impacts on
services, employment. and society are enormous due to the size of this segment of our population. The City
is seeing the impacts first hand as folks with institutional memory afe preparing for retirement. There are
fewer workers and managers competing for the number of positions and they have different values
regarding work. This has implications on finding replacements for the upcoming retirements of the baby
boomer generation. Additionally the retirement system was designed when there were more workers than
jobs and this dynamic is changing.

Government is facing this issue earlier than the private section because of the differences in the pension
system which encourages people to retire earlier. Opportunities exist for creating another approach to work
that would serve both generations better. The boomers generally value their work and wish to continue
being active and involved, but they wish to change how much they work. Gen x'ers want balance between
work and private life and are unwilling to be as dedicated workaholics as their predecessors.

Boomers are also changing the market place in terms of the services they require, goods they wish to
purchase and the impact this will have on those who follow them.

As a service provider and employer, the City will be impacted by the retirement of the baby boomers in our
organization, they can be a resource in the community and will determine the services needed in our
community, be it healthcare, housing downtown, recreation activities or shuttles.

~ I(--~:~

....

~/,s /Q)(o

Signature of Council Member

Date

TI ,ministrative Code requires reports of conferences or meetings for which a council member requests per diem or expense reimbursement
Reports must be submitted to the City Clerk of no later than the Wednesday of the week before the next City Council meeting.
