5. SPECIAL ORDERS: <br />Proclamation: National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month <br />Mayor Pierce stated that this health problem can and does affect all people in our <br />communities. She introduced the various Redwood City based providers of alcohol <br />and drug addiction recovery programs present at the meeting: Bridges Program, <br />cordilleras Mental Health Center, Daytop California Adolescent Program, El Centro de <br />Libertad, Mental Health Association of San Mateo County, Redwood Center, The <br />Sequoia Center, Service League of San Mateo County's HOPE and in -Jail Programs, <br />The Children's Place Program of the Legacy Foundation, Youth and Family <br />Enrichment Services' Archway and Insights Alcohol & Drug Services Programs. <br />Proclamation: National Prostate Cancer Month <br />Mayor Pierce asked Mr. John Murray, a member of the Prostate Information Forum <br />and Linda Merslich, RN to receive the proclamation. Mr. Murray stated that the <br />purpose is to provide as much information as possible so that the decision is the best <br />for the individual. He further thanked Dr. Henry Ritter, Jr. who was the founder of the <br />group and died two years ago. He stated that the group is active and asked that those <br />who have been diagnosed should be encouraged to visit the organization some time. <br />6. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS AND CONSENT CALENDAR - CITY <br />COUNCIUREDEVELOPMENT AGENCY <br />M/S Hartnett/Ira to waive reading of the Consent Calendar except the ordinances by <br />title, adopt the resolutions and the ordinances, and approve other items. Item 6.3 <br />removed from Consent Calendar for separate consideration. The motion passed by <br />a unanimous roll call vote by those present with Council Member Bain <br />abstaining on Item 6.1.A, Council Member Howard and Vice Mayor Foust absent. <br />John Edmonds thanked the Service League for help with the Hope House, and spoke <br />about a book on the history of Redwood City that is expected to be available in early <br />summer. He explained that there will be an income that will go directly to history <br />preservation programs in Redwood City. <br />Matt Leddy, representing the Friends of Redwood City, stated that he had participated <br />in a phone survey conducted by Competitive Edge Research. Several questions were <br />asked about such issues as traffic, public schools, downtown growth, and the future of <br />our bay lands. He explained that one question was whether he was in favor of <br />affordable housing, allowing for a yes or no answer with no provision for offering a <br />specific distinction. He stated his fear of an effort by development interests to make an <br />end run around the City planning process.
