<br />"Exhibit A" <br /> <br />January 12, 1990 <br />FLSA Status: Exempt <br /> <br />POLICE CAPTAIN <br /> <br />DEFINITION <br /> <br />An exempt, at will, senior executive level classification under the <br />direction of the Chief of Police to command, manage, direct, plan, control, <br />review, train, staff, organize and budget a division of the police <br />department. <br /> <br />SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED <br /> <br />General direction is provided by the Police Chief. <br /> <br />Responsibilities include direct supervision of sworn and non-sworn staff, <br />including professional, technical and clerical personnel. <br /> <br />EXAMPLE OF DUTIES <br /> <br />Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: <br /> <br />Functions as assistant to the Chief of Police and serves as Police Chief in <br />the Chief1s absence. As Division Commander, commands and manages a <br />Division in the the Police Department. <br /> <br />Supervises the operation and activities of uniform patrol, investigations, <br />and support staff; plans, directs, supervises and coordinates the <br />activities of sworn and non-sworn personnel in preserving order, protecting <br />life and property, and in enforcing laws and municipal ordinances. <br /> <br />Formulates rules, procedures, and policies and see that they are carried <br />out. <br /> <br />Researches modern police management methods, formulates and enforces rules, <br />procedures and policies for efficient operation of a Division. <br /> <br />Directs the implementation of in-service training programs for assigned <br />personnel. <br /> <br />Reviews the evaluations of employee performance and takes appropriate <br />action where necessary; performs other personnel management tasks. <br /> <br />Prepares and administers a Police Department Division budget. <br /> <br />Confers with citizens and City officials on law enforcement problems and <br />assists in the development of innovative municipal law enforcement <br />practices. <br /> <br />Assists in coordinating law enforcement activities with the activities of <br />other City departments and other law enforcement agencies. <br /> <br />11215 <br />
