<br />ORIGi f'JAL <br /> <br />RESOLUTION No.1I! 72 <br /> <br />OCT 3 ,0 1989 <br /> <br />CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF REDWOOD CITY, COUNTY OF SAN MATEO <br /> <br />ST ATE OF CALIFORNIA <br /> <br />* * * * * * * * * * * * * <br /> <br />RESOLUTION URGING THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA AND <br />SOUTHERN PACIFIC TRANSPORTATION COMPANY TO OPEN THE OLD <br />DUMBARTON BRIDGE TO RAILWAY TRAFFIC ON AN EMERGENCY BASIS. <br /> <br />RESOL VED, by the City Council of the City of Redwood City, County <br />of San Mateo, State of California, that <br /> <br />WHEREAS, an earthquake, commencing on October 17, 1989, at 5: 04 p. m. , <br />has caused conditions of extreme peril to the safety of persons and property <br />within this City and County; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the earthquake has either damaged or threatened to <br />damage the major highways, freeways, bridges and connectors within the Bay <br />Area; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Bay Bridge, a major link to the East Bay, has been <br />closed and may remain closed for at least three months pending repairs; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, as a result of the Bay Bridge closure, congestion has and <br />will dramatically increase on the southern bay crossings to San Mateo County <br />and connecting freeways; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, this condition has made transportation difficult in and <br />through San Mateo County, particularly for those Bay Area and County residents <br />who need access to San Francisco and the East Bay; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, safe and adequate transportation connectors are vital to <br />both the public safety and the economic well-being of Redwood City and the entire <br />Bay Area; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the old Dumbarton railroad bridge still exists between San <br />Mateo County and the East Bay although the bridge is not currently in use; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, with some effort, the State of California and Southern Pacific <br />Transportation Company could make this railroad bridge operational for railway <br />passenger use on an emergency basis; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, this railroad bridge would provide one more important <br />transportation connection for San Mateo County and Bay Area residents to help <br />alleviate traffic congestion pending the repair of the Bay Bridge and other <br />important highways. <br />
