<br />Of)IG"d i'lL <br />\ II u, <br /> <br />HESOLUTION NO.LU 71 <br /> <br />OCT 3 '0 1989 <br /> <br />CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF REDWOOD CITY, COUNTY OF SAN MATEO <br /> <br />ST ATE OF CALIFORNIA <br /> <br />* * * * * * * * * * * * * <br /> <br />RESOLUTION URGING THE BAY AREA RAPID TRANSIT <br />DISTRICT TO OPEN THE BART STATION IN COLMA ON AN EMERGENCY BASIS <br /> <br />* * * * * * * * * * * * <br /> <br />RESOL VED, by the City Council of the City of Redwood City, County <br />of San Mateo, State of California, that <br /> <br />WHEREAS, an earthquake, commencing on October 17, 1989, at 5: 04 p. m. , <br />has caused conditions of extreme peril to the safety of persons and property <br />within this City and County; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the earthquake has either damaged or threatened to damage <br />or threatened to damage the major highways, freeways, bridges and connectors <br />within the Bay Area; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Bay Bridge and important freeway connections to San <br />Francisco and the East Bay have been closed and may remain closed for months, <br />if not permanently; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, this condition has made transportation difficult in and through <br />San Mateo County, particularly for those Bay Area and County residents <br />who need access to San Francisco and the East Bay; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, safe and adequate transportation is vital to both the public <br />safety and the economic well-being of Redwood City and the entire Bay <br />Area; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) has recently <br />extended its service lines to the City of Colma; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, it is believed that with some effort these service lines could <br />be made operational for passenger use; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, opening the Colma BART Station for passenger use on an <br />emergency basis would obviously help to alleviate the gridlock and facilitate <br />smoother transportation in San Mateo County and the Bay Area during this <br />time of trouble; <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED BY THE City Council of <br />the City of Redwood City that: <br /> <br />The City Council hereby urges the Bay Area Rapid Transit District <br />(BART) to open the proposed Colma BART Station on an emergency basis <br />and to do whatever is necessary to make that station fully operational as soon <br />as possible. <br />
