I & 3 Improvement Project - Engineering File No. 803-02

Recommendation
Approve and authorize an agreement with Nolte Associates, Inc., of San Jose,
California, for providing consulting Engineering Design Services for the Design of the
Redwood Shores Sewer Pump Stations Nos. 1 & 3 Improvement Project, in an amount
not to exceed $83,320.

Background
The Redwood Shores Area is relatively fiat and does not allow for the use of gravity flow
~n the sewage system. Therefore, as part of the Development ^greement a network of
sewer pump stations were installed as the different areas of Redwood Shores were
developed. Redwood Shores is now built out, and there is a total of 26 sewer pump
stations (Centrum, 1-25), the newest of which is Station No. 24, located along
Canvasback Way. The oldest of the pump stations are Pump Stations Nos. 1, 2, & 3.
Pump Station No. 2 was rehabilitated in 1998-99, because it was in the worst condition
among the three Stations. At that time, staff was aware that Stations Nos. 1 & 3 would
be in need of rehabilitation soon.

The stations were originally built in the early sixties. They originally served the Madne
World amusement park and the areas between the freeway and Island Park, north of
the lagoon. Subsequently, the Oracle campus was built (Centrum), and the Centrum
Sewer Pump Station was built to pump into Pump Station No. 1. Stations Nos. 1 & 3
are approaching the end of their useful life, and are in need of rehabilitation. This
rehabilitation will bring them up to par with our newer stations. Improvements will
concentrate on the maintainability of the pumps, state of the art pump controls, and
emergency notification. Standby power generators were installed a few years back, as
part of a maintenance program in 1998. ·

The same personnel at Nolte Associates, Inc. assisted the City with the design of the
Pump Station No. 2 rehabilitation. They are particularly knowledgeable in this very
specific field, and have worked with the City's maintenance personnel. Therefore, Nolte
Associates, Inc. are familiar with the specific setups the City's maintenance crew
prefers. The design fees are competitive with industry standards.

A complete copy of the agreement is available for review in the City Clerk's office.

-1-
