<br />EXHIBIT "A" <br /> <br />Page 1 of 2 <br />fV OF REDWOOD CITY <br /> <br />12/11/87 <br /> <br />ASSISTANT CITY MANAGER <br /> <br />DEFINITION <br /> <br />Under direction of the City Manager, acts as the primary staff assistant to <br />the City Manager, performs a wide variety of difficult administrative and <br />operational tasks, and acts for the City Manager in his/her absence. <br /> <br />DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS <br /> <br />The Assistant City Manager acts for the City Manager in regard to the <br />internal administration of the City. The incumbent represents the City <br />Manager at community and official events and to the media; conducts special <br />studies and projects regarding the determination of policy or administrative <br />action, and may implement said policies or actions. <br /> <br />EXAMPLES OF DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to the <br />follm>ling: <br /> <br />Confers with the public, other governmental agencies and C1V1C groups to <br />resolve problems and to develop and coordinate city affairs. <br /> <br />Coordinates interdepartmental activities, follow-up on City Council directed <br />projects or assignments. <br /> <br />Identifies real and potential operating problems and works with the <br />departments to resolve said problems. <br /> <br />In the absence of the City Manager, assumes authority over all departments. <br /> <br />Participates in long range planning, including capital improvements, <br />organization change and operational needs. <br /> <br />Represents the City and City Manager by making speeches and presentations and <br />acts as spokesperson to the media. <br /> <br />Supervises other administrative and clerical staff. <br /> <br />Participates in departmental reviews and decisions on the administration of <br />the budget. <br /> <br />QUALIFICATIONS <br /> <br />Knowledge of: <br /> <br />Thorough knowledge of principles of local government administration. <br /> <br />Public finance and personnel administration, techniques of management, budget <br />and operational analysis. <br />
