<br />10549 <br /> <br />ORIGINAL <br />JUL 6 1981 <br /> <br />RES 0 L UTI 0 N <br /> <br />N O. <br /> <br />RESOLUTION URGING THE PRESERVATION OF ENDANGERED WETLANDS <br />BY PLACING THEM UNDER THE PERMANENT PROTECTION OF THE SAN <br />FRANCISCO BAY NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE AND CALLING UPON <br />THE UNITED STATES FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE TO EXPEDITE THE <br />ACQUISITION OF BAY WETLANDS <br /> <br />WHEREAS, of the original 200,000 acres of San Francisco Bay wetlands, <br /> <br />only 37,000 remain, and almost every wetland parcel has been proposed <br /> <br />for development; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, these remaining acres are essential for wildlife habitat, <br /> <br />pollution control, flood control, spawning grounds for fish and shellfish, <br /> <br />groundwater recharge and saltwater intrusion control; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, development of these lands would increase traffic problems <br /> <br />and seismic liability for local jurisdictions; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, preservation of the wetlands would provide needed open <br /> <br />space and recreational opportunities for the community; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, these lands can be protected by urging the U. S. Fish <br /> <br />and Wildlife Service to accelerate acquisition of the 5,000 acres that <br /> <br />remain from the initial Congressional authorization for the San Francisco <br /> <br />Bay National Wildlife Refuge (1972); <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Redwood City Council <br /> <br />does hereby urge the preservation of endangered wetlands by placing them <br /> <br />under the permanent protection of the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife <br /> <br />Refuge and further, calls upon the United States Fish and Wildlife Service <br /> <br />to expedite the acquisition of Bay Wetlands. <br /> <br />1 0549 <br />
