CA OFFICIALS from page 1 .. . . . . . . .. . . . <br /> <br />Redistricting - monitoring any redistrict- <br />ing proposals and providing input as needed and <br />requested <br />· Campaign reform - involving the League <br />to ensure that any proposed policy does not <br />negatively impact local government <br />· Monitoring legislation - the committee <br />will continue to monitor bills that are under its <br />scope of responsibility. <br /> <br />During his remarks, Assemblymember Price, <br />who is chair of the Elections & Redistricting <br />Committee, shared some issues that he felt may <br />arise in 2007. Those areas included: <br /> <br />· Redistricting <br />Initiative reform <br />· Voter participation <br />· Voter confidence <br />· Campaign finance <br />· Moving presidential primary date up <br /> <br />Secretary of State Debra Bowen also dis- <br />cussed some issues she felt were of concern, <br />which included voting systems and declining <br />voter turnout and registration. <br /> <br />League Legislative Director Dan Carrigg gave <br />the committee an update on the state budget, and <br />distributed a summary report on the budget and a <br />handout that discussed the implementation of the <br />infrastructure bonds. League Legislative Repre- <br />sentative Thomas also delivered remarks, dis- <br />cussing the committee's role in dealing with <br />legislation under the scope of the committee, <br />such as AB 9 (Huff), a bill that deals with voter <br />identification that may be of interest. <br /> <br />The Administrative Services Policy Commit- <br />tee will next meet in Ontario, at the Ontario <br />Convention Center, on Friday, March 30. <br /> <br />Eklund, a council member with the city of Novato <br />and Los Angeles Council Member Dennis Zine, were <br />among 20 new board members elected at NLC's <br />Congress of Cities Conference, held in Reno, Nev., <br />on Dec. 5-9, 2006. The NLC board of directors is <br />made up of 40 members, and meets three times a <br />year to shape the direction of the organization, <br /> <br />Three other California officials were also tapped <br />for leadership posts with NLC. Los Angeles City <br />Council President Eric Garcetti was appointed <br />chairperson of the International Council of NLC, <br />which helps develop recommendations on policy <br />and advocacy strategies that address international <br />issues that are significant to municipal governments <br />in the United States. <br /> <br />Los Angeles Council Member Ed Reyes was se- <br />lected as chair of NLC's Community and Economic <br />Development Policy and Advocacy Committee. The <br />committee is one of NLC's seven standing commit- <br />tees. Dan Furtado, mayor of Campbell, was ap- <br />pointed vice chair of NLC's Public Safety and Crime <br />Prevention Committee, which develops NLC's policy <br />positions and advocates on related issues on behalf <br />of NLC, <br /> <br />The League of California Cities congratulates all <br />those elected and appointed to NLC positions. <br /> <br />. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . <br /> <br />NLC from page 1 <br /> <br />California city officials that are attending the <br />event should mark their calendars for the following <br />activities, <br /> <br />Monday, March 12 - League Reception at <br />the Hilton Washington Hotel.
