the members to assist neighbors after securing their own residences and families. <br />Nine of the 11 neighborhood associations have teams set up, have selected team <br />leaders and emergency meeting locations in the event of an emergency. She further <br />thanked all staff members for supporting the program. <br />Pamela Kurtzman, HeartSafe Program Coordinator, explained that the program <br />aims to develop and support programs that specifically improve the health and <br />wellness of community members. She stated that sudden cardiac arrest is <br />responsible for 350,000 deaths each year in the U.S. and most often results after <br />physical exertion or times of stress, both of which are likely occurrences at the time <br />of a disaster. Defibrillation of potentially life saving shock is the only effective <br />treatment of sudden cardiac arrest, however, CPR will keep the victim minimally <br />oxygenated until a defibrillator is available. An automated external defibrillator (AED) <br />is a small portable device that analyzes heart rhythms, provides voice prompted <br />instructions and if determined necessary, can deliver a potentially life saving shock <br />to a sudden cardiac arrest victim. She handed out information in both English and Spanish. <br />Mayor Pierce thanked the Sequoia Healthcare District for the donation of AED's for <br />the 4 CERT trailers. <br />D. Council Member Howard — stated that on Wednesday, January 24, at the <br />Community Activities Building, KGO was hosting a community night from 7 -9 p.m. <br />asking the community what stories should be told and shared. <br />E. Mayor Pierce — stated that in February there will be two days that residents can <br />dispose of a -waste such as televisions, computers, components, etc. <br />9. ADJOURNMENT — <br />M/S Howard /Ira to adjourn until the next City Council meeting of February 5, 2007 in <br />memory of Vice Mayor Foust's aunt, Lorraine Axom, who passed away on January 18, <br />2007 in Derby, Connecticut.
