Pamela Kurtzman, HeartSafe Program Coordinator, explained that the program aims to develop and support programs that specifically improve the health and wellness of community members. She stated that sudden cardiac arrest is responsible for 350,000 deaths each year in the U.S. and most often results after physical exertion or times of stress, both of which are likely occurrences at the time of a disaster. Defibrillation of potentially life saving shock is the only effective treatment of sudden cardiac arrest, however, CPR will keep the victim minimally oxygenated until a defibrillator is available. An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a small portable device that analyzes heart rhythms, provides voice prompted instructions and if determined necessary, can deliver a potentially life saving shock to a sudden cardiac arrest victim.
