<br />MARCH 1983 <br /> <br />EXHIBIT A <br /> <br />LEAD MAINTENANCE ELECTRICIAN <br /> <br />DEFINITION <br /> <br />Under direction, to lead and personally assist a small crew involved in a <br />variety of complex and skilled work concerned with 'electrical operations, <br />maintenance, alteration and repair of electrical and traffic control systems, <br />including but not limited to installation of new traffic signals; and to do <br />related work as required. <br /> <br />DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS <br /> <br />Incumbents in this class may be assigned to lead the work activities of the <br />signing, striping and electrical crews. An employee in this class is respon- <br />sible for the performance of skilled level electrical work. The employee is <br />subject to 24-hour call for emergency work. Assignments are received orally <br />and in writing, either in the form of work orders or reports of unsatisfactory <br />operation of equipment. The work may be carried on independently, but is ' <br />reviewed by the engineering staff. <br /> <br />EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY) <br /> <br />Performs electrical maintenance for traffic signals and streetlights, both <br />underground and aerial; installs new traffic signals; repairs and updates <br />old traffic signals; repairs, services and maintains lighting, power heating, <br />pumps, fire alarms, communications; repairs, installs and makes additions to <br />existing installations of electrical systems in City buildings; repairs and <br />replaces defective parts in switches and other fixtures and appliances; <br />performs necessary construction work relative to electrical maintenance, using <br />jack hammer, backhoe, bucket truck, dump truck, concrete saw; keeps time and <br />work records; supervises a crew and personally participates in installing <br />and repairing street lights, traffic signals and electrical installations. <br /> <br />REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES <br /> <br />Good knowledge of the practices, methods, tools, materials and equipment <br />used in electrical maintenance and repair; good knowledge of electrical <br />meters, motors, testing devices and manual and automatic electronic control <br />equipment; good knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions; <br />good knowledge of the provisions of local and national electrical codes <br />applicable to installation, maintenance and repair work; ability to establish <br />good working relationships with others; ability to read and interpret spec- <br />ifications, sketches, diagrams and blueprints; ability to maintain records; <br />ability to locate and correct defects in electrical power lines and equipment; <br />physical condition sufficient to engage in heavy physical exertion outdoors <br />in all types of weather and at considerable height above the ground. <br /> <br />ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING <br /> <br />Considerable full time experience in electrical maintenance and repair of <br />electrical and electronic systems; completion of a standard high school <br />course or equivalent, supplemented by courses in electricity and electronics; <br />or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the <br />required knowledge, skills and abilities. <br />
