� ATTAC� 3 7.1 A <br /> Page 4 <br /> Vilia Montgomery-El Camino Real Streetscape Improvements <br /> Project Seope <br /> 2/20/07 <br /> The pedestrian crossing and street and Erontage impravements proposed£or the MTC/HIP <br /> grant extend along El Camino Real from Maple Street on the soufih to jackson AveJWilson St <br /> on the north.The pedestrian crossing improvements would be at Madison Avenue a�nd at <br /> Maple Street and would improve the pedestrian experience for residents of both the high- <br /> density residential mixed-use project Villa Montgomery and the Franklin Street Apart,ments, <br /> both located at tI�intersection of Maple and El Cami.no Real.The Redwood City Transit - <br /> Center arid CalTrain station is located between Broadway and James Avenue, <br /> approximately 1/3 mile walking distance from the project location. In addition to the <br /> residents of these two high pra£ile multi-€amily rental pxojects,the improvements will better <br /> connect the residents of the single and nnulti-family neighborhoods west of El Camino Reai <br /> to transit services and the dawntown. <br /> Two basic types of capital improvemen�s are proposed,pedestrian crossing improvetnents <br /> and street and frantage impravements. They aze described below.The canfiguration of <br /> these improveme�ts vary according to existrng conditions,however there are a number o€ <br /> constant elements.For exarrtple,all crossing improvements include a refe�ge area to protect <br /> pedesixians from vehicles, and typical frontage improvements znclude side street bulbouts <br /> and cor►sistently-spaced street trees ancl pedestrian-oriented street lights.With these <br /> improvernents fihe length of the north side pedestrian crossing expased to traffic woutd be <br /> reduced froxn approximateiy 85' to 60',or approximately 30°�. <br /> Madisoan Avenue/Diller Street Crossin�-This x►ew pedestrian c:rossing will link existing <br /> and new/infill neighborhood azeas,and provide an intermediate crossing between jefferson <br /> Avenue and Maple Street.Recommended improvements include a mid-block sidewalk <br /> bulb-out on the east side of El Camino sou#h of Diller, and a fuII bulb-out at the northwest <br /> corner of Madison;the southbou�d U-turn lane at Madison would be eliminated,while the <br /> northbound left turn lane would remain.The existing median on the north side of the <br /> intersection wouZd be widened and xeconfigzu'ed to create a refuge.New rnedian street trees <br /> north and south of the intersection will be integrated.A 3-phase signal with pedestrian <br /> controll�x would be installed;"continental"crosswalk painting will be incorporaied and <br /> curb ramps will be installed at all c,rossings.Other street and frontage improvements <br /> indude street trees, trash receptacles and transit signage and markings. <br /> Maple S#reet-Recommended street conner improvernents are a bulb-out on El Caznino at <br /> the northeast and a sidewalk extension at the northwest.The north side crosswalk would <br /> remain in its current lacations,and the north side median would be wider�ed to <br /> accommodate a pedesixiaz�refuge.Assaciated lane narrowing,roadway re-sealing and <br /> restriping,and new median street trees north and south af the intersection would be <br /> incorporated;existing pedestrian signal controllex xelocated as required.Street trees,trash <br /> receptacIes and transzt signage and markings will be included as part of the street and <br /> frontage improvements. <br />
