Moeller
Redevelopment Manager
City of Redwood City
1017 Middlefield Road
Redwood City, CA 94063

Dear Susan:

Thank you for hearing about our San Mateo County History Museum's plans for
the 2007 edition of our "Celebration of the Peninsula's Diversity: Immigrants Day
Festival." We propose that the Redwood City Redevelopment Agency consider
granting $7,500 to us to help us with the organization of this event. The cost of
the event is $15,000, excluding museum staff hours (see budget). Safeway will
match your contribution. The Agency supported last year's event and has
indicated interest in this year's. Safeway's participation will make it the signature
corporate sponsor of the effort. Smaller donations from local businesses will also
be solicited to underwrite some of the museum's staff time committed to the
program.

As you know, the museum is under the umbrella of the San Mateo County
Historical Association which operates the 36,000 square foot Museum within the
Old San Mateo County Courthouse. In addition we operate the Sanchez Adobe of
Pacifica and the Woodside Store at Tripp and Kings Mountain Roads. Our annual
budget is $1.1 million dollars of which less then 15% is provided by the County.
We raise and earn the rest of the revenues needed for our museum and historic
sites. Leading citizens of the Peninsula formed the Association in 1935. Our
museum was housed at the College of San Mateo until 1998, when we moved it to
Redwood City. Since that time, $20 million have been spent on improvements on
this museum block with major government support from FEMA, the State of
California, and the Redwood City Redevelopment Agency. About $9 million of
the $20 million came in the form of private contributions.

Among the improvements made late last year was the installation of a permanent
exhibit gallery dedicated to the immigrant experience on the Peninsula. This $1
million portion of the museum is engaging, educational, and highly interactive.
The subject is of great interest to the people of San Mateo County and their
