6.1K
age 1

June 26, 2007

SUBJECT
4th of July Parking

RECOMMENDATION
Approve, by motion, the suspension of parking meter rates in the Downtown area on
July 4, 2007.

BACKGROUND
On July 4th, 2007 Downtown Redwood City will be the site of a large parade in honor of
American Independence Day. Due to the parade route and various parade-related
events, much of Downtown's parking supply will be unavailable. In addition, a large
share of what remains will be in the three off-street parking areas which require no
parking enforcement due to their gated, pay-on-exit configuration. Therefore, staff feels
that it would be inefficient and impractical to schedule parking enforcement for on-street
parking and un-gated off-street parking areas on July 4th.

Section 20.133 of the Municipal Code provides for the temporary suspension .ofparking
meter rates in situations such as this by motion of the City Council:

Sec. 20.133. PROVISIONS FOR TEMPORARY SUSPENSION OF METER RATES:
The provisions of Division may be suspended from time to time by motion of the City Council in any
case where the Council finds that strict compliance would not serve the pUblic interest, including,
but not limited to, the use of public streets and sidewalks for celebrations, special public events,
celebration of holiday seasons and any other such activity or purpose as the City Council in its sole
discretion shall determine. (Ore!, No. 2287, S 2,8-22-2005)

ALTERNATIVES
Alternatively, parking enforcement officers could be scheduled for the day and the meter
rates could be enforced in the metered parking areas which remain available on July 4th.

FISCAL IMPACT

The suspension of parking meter rates will result in a loss of between approximately
$2,000 and $2,500 from the Parking Fund.

~~<?#~

usan Moeller

R~~ai:/J--~

Edwsro Everett
City Manager
