4. INVOCATION — Father Vern Jones, Episcopal Priest of the Diocese of California <br />5. SPECIAL ORDERS: <br />Redwood City's Partnership Academy for Community Teamwork (PACT) graduation <br />Mayor Pierce and Vice Mayor Foust presented certificates to the PACT graduates <br />present at the meeting, thanking them for their time and encouraging them to participate <br />in other community activities. <br />6. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS AND CONSENT CALENDAR - CITY COUNCIL: <br />William J. Johnson stated that he spoke approximately one month ago about his <br />recycling program that recycles about 1 -1/2 tons a week. He stated that his employee is <br />very scared having been cited by a City employee who has made the topic a personal <br />one. He further stated that he does not wish to stop the program and sought assistance <br />from the Council. <br />Kit Durgin stated that she is a resident since 1993, a proud graduate of both PACT and <br />Community Builders, and a volunteer at both International Institute and Sequoia Adult <br />School. She stated that she is proud of the community's collective commitment to <br />embracing all of it's citizens and addressing their needs. She further expressed concern <br />with the immigration and enforcement rates and how they have been conducted. She <br />asked that Council take affirmative initiative on behalf of the immigrant residents that <br />she believes mostly contribute to the community and deserve respect and safety. <br />Lou Calabro, President of the European American Issues Forum, stated his purpose is <br />to address civil rights. He further stated that the schools are honoring groups other than <br />the European Americans. He stated an example where John Gill School honored all it's <br />students countries by having them discuss the country of their origin. He reiterated that <br />European Americans have the right to be honored and respected. <br />Joe Webb stated the "Report" helps define the problem. He suggested the Council do <br />its own analysis to determine whether crime has gone up or down. He referred to <br />Council Member Hartnett stating that although he has no data, he called Mr. Webb a <br />racist and liar. He continued to cite statistics from the "Report". <br />Shirley Webster, from Peninsula Interfaith action and Second Baptist Church, thanked <br />Council for having Item 6.1.E on the agenda. She stated her experience with safety <br />issues at Willow Street and Hancock Street , requesting Council approval of the stop <br />sign to provide safety for the children crossing the street in that particular area. <br />M/S Foust/Aguirre to waive reading of the Consent Calendar except the ordinances by <br />title, adopt the resolutions and the ordinances, and approve other items.
