<br />i'roclamatton <br /> <br /> <br /><;;"\ ,7 <br />..\j <br />U <br /> <br />THE PORT OF REDWOOD CITY <br />CELEBRATES ITS 70TH ANNIVERSARY <br />JULY 16-22, PORT OF REDWOOD CITY WEEK <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the waters of the Port of Redwood City were used for trade and travel by indigenous peoples for <br />hundreds of years before Richard Dana's excursions in 1838 were documented in "Two Years Before <br />the Mast "; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Port of Redwood City, well established and well known, became the county's first incorporated <br />town in 1867, through a voter approved amendment to the City Charter on June 11, 1936, the Port of Redwood City <br />was formally opened September 10, 1937 during a three-day festival which drew visitors from hundreds of miles, <br />and extravagant accolades from City officials and important newspapers of the time; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Port with its long and historic operations, is today one of the most successful small ports on the <br />Pacific Coast; and with its utilization of the natural waterways and access to San Francisco Bay, the Port of <br />Redwood City adds a unique and special character to the City of Redwood City. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARBARA PIERCE, MAYOR OF REDWOOD CITY, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY <br />COUNCIL, do hereby proclaim JULY 16-22 PORT OF REDWOOD CITY WEEK, and encourage everyone to <br />visit the Port during this year's 70th Anniversary Waterfront Festival July 21-22 and celebrate the Port's many <br />contributions to the residents of Redwood City through its recreational facilities and commercial and maritime <br />ventures.
