6.M. - Page 1 of 6 <br />/<�ik <br />Redwood <br />CitylCallifornia <br />Faunded 1867 <br />A,&/ <br />DATE: May 6, 2019 <br />SUBJECT <br />STAFF REPORT <br />To the Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />From the City Manager <br />Resolution of the City Council authorizing an additional $1,221,756 in Fiscal Year 2018-19 Park Impact <br />Fees for the Magical Bridge Playground Project <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />Adopt a resolution (1) authorizing the City Manager to increase the contract amount for the Magical <br />Bridge Playground Project, if necessary, up to 22% of the amount awarded to assume design/build <br />responsibilities for Barbara Butler's signature Magical Bridge Playhouse, Ava's Bridge, benches and retreat <br />huts; and perform additional unforeseen excavation, subgrade preparation, and utility improvements for <br />a total contract amount up to $6,775,192 and (2) approving an appropriation amendment to Fiscal Year <br />2018-2019 Park Impact Fees Fund by $1,221,756 towards this project. <br />STRATEGIC INITIATIVE <br />Community for All Ages <br />BACKGROUND <br />On September 13, 2016, the City Council approved a license agreement with the Magical Bridge <br />Foundation ("Foundation") to build a new, highly accessible Magical Bridge Playground in Redwood City. <br />This partnership was inspired by the original privately -developed playground in Mitchell Park, Palo Alto, <br />California. The Foundation raised funding for the project with major donors sponsoring specific features <br />and zones and the City allocating Capital Improvement Project (CIP) funding for the project. On September <br />10, 2018, the Magical Bridge Playground construction project was awarded to Robert A. Bothman <br />Construction ("Bothman") for the base bid amount of $5,553,436.00, and, as standard practice, the award <br />also approved a ten percent (10%) contingency, an amount of $555,343.00. <br />Although five bid alternates were presented as possible added items to the base bid, no bid alternates <br />were awarded.
