REPORT

6.10
Page 1

To the Honorable Mayor and CIty Council
Fr -- th- - Of -M-a- -- -
ome.'na er

October 8, 2007

SUBJECT
Public Allies Silicon Valley Agreement for AmeriCorps Service Position at Fair Oaks
Community Center

RECOMMENDATION
Approve and authorize the City Manager to sign the Public Allies Silicon Valley
Agreement for AmeriCorps Service Position at Fair Oaks Community Center.

BACKGROUND
Last year, as a way to better meet the demand for the services of the Fair Oaks
Community Center Infonnation and Referral program, staff developed a pilot project to
incorporate an AmeriCorps Intern as a part of our Information and Referral Program
staff - expanding our team from three to four Human Services Specialists.

Staff developed a partnership with Public Allies Silicon Valley for the placement of an
AmeriCorps Public Ally at the Fair Oaks Community Center and secured a two-year
grant to fund this pilot. This is the second year of what has proven to be a very
successful pilot.

The addition of the Public Ally has made it possible for the City to better meet the
demand for services at the Fair Oaks Community Center and for our information and
referral program to develop more comprehensive services for homeless individuals and
families in our community. This has been an important contribution to our own City's
efforts assist homeless individuals and families in the context of the county-wide effort
to end homelessness (HOPE Plan).

The agreement covers the period from September 2007 to June 2008. Redwood City
will pay to Public Allies Silicon Valley a total of $15.777 in three separate installments
toward the Ally's stipend.

ALTERNATIVES
Council could make modifications to the contract or decide not to approve the contract.

FISCAL IMPACT

No city general funds would be used to pay for this contract. Sufficient funds have been
raised through a grant to pay for the Public Ally placement.

d~ Q~C2rz:

Ten Chin - Corinne Centeno ~
Human Services Manager Parks, Recreation, and Community Services
Director
