Our neighborhood has many large old trees. Generally, <br />builders want to cut trees down because it's more complicated and expensive to work around <br />them than to get rid of them. I used to live in Palo Alto, and many times builders would chop <br />down trees and pay the fine (`oops, sorry, didn't get a permit') because this was cheaper than <br />working around the trees. Of course, they have to plant replacement trees but those take forever <br />to grow (a builder is certainly not going to plant a tree anywhere close to the size of what they <br />got rid of). The large old trees provide much needed shade and keep the air cleaner, as you <br />know. They are a great resource for the city and its residents. <br />Anything you can do to preserve the charm of the old neighborhoods is much appreciated.
