Tonight you will be considering building codes for
the city which go even further than the state requirements. I strongly advocate adopting aggressive "reach"
codes, since the potential of climate change is moving much faster than anyone thought.
Acting wisely now to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions saves money on infrastructure later. Also, all -
electric buildings are cheaper and safer (no gas leaks in our homes, and no risk of ruptured gas lines in an
earthquake) than buildings that use gas. It's in everyone's best interest to electrify buildings and setting strong
reach codes is a way to get there.
An ambitious reach code that requires all -electric buildings is a step a city can do on its own to greatly reduce
our carbon footprint. Other forward -thinking cities like Menlo Park are passing ambitious reach codes - so let's
join forces with them!
Thanks for all you do,
Laurel Bergman
