CITY OF REDWOOD CITY <br /> ASSISTANT CITY ATTORNEY/ <br /> SENIOR ASSISTANT CITY ATTORNEY <br /> DEFINITION <br /> Under general direction of the City Attorney, assists in administering all phases of City legal <br /> work. Performs specialized and complex legal work in connection with more significant legal <br /> problems or in a critical specialty area.Assists in the legal representation of the City Council, <br /> its Agencies, Boards and Commissions, the City Manager and City departments. Performs <br /> related work as assigned. <br /> DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS <br /> This is a flexibly staffed position, with incumbents assigned to the appropriate level based <br /> on overall related legal experience and demonstrated proficiency in a local government <br /> setting. The Senior Assistant City Attorney is distinguished from the Assistant City Attorney <br /> by a higher degree of experience within a municipal government setting, the ability to handle <br /> the most complex and/or high profile legal matters, and acts as the City Attorney in his or <br /> her absence. <br /> SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED <br /> Assistant City Attorney <br /> Direction is provided by the City Attorney. May provide lead supervision to Deputy City <br /> Attorneys, and direct or indirect supervision of administrative support staff as well as outside <br /> counsel. <br /> Senior Assistant City Attorney <br /> Direction is provided by the City Attorney. May provide lead supervision of Assistant City <br /> Attorneys, and direct or indirect supervision of Deputy City Attorneys, administrative support <br /> staff, and/or outside counsel. <br /> EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES <br /> 1. Act as senior counsel in handling serious, controversial and complex legal matters. <br /> 2. Represent the City Attorney at City Council and other board, commission, or <br /> committee meetings and/or events as required, and render legal advice on agenda <br /> items. <br /> 3. Confer with department heads concerning legal issues; make appropriate decisions <br /> or recommendations. <br /> 4.
