EXHIBIT "A"
NAMING OF CITY-OWNED LAND AND FACILITIES POLICY
1. PURPOSE
The City Council of the City of Redwood City is responsible for the naming of City-
owned land and facilities. However, the City recognizes that from time to time, the
public desires to have City-owned land and facilities, such as parks and athletic fields,
named after venerated individuals, geographic features, or prominent organizations.
The development of a policy to guide public requests for naming City facilities is
intended to enable the process to be applied in a fair, objective, and consistent
manner.
This policy applies to the naming of public land and facilities, excluding City streets
that are more substantial than an "amenity". An amenity is defined as an improvement
located on City property, which is less than the entire portion of a City property, and
as more fully described in the Donation, Sponsorship, and City-Related Foundations
Grant Policy. This policy is intended to create opportunities for the City to attract
potential donors and sponsors, who contribute significant funds to assist the City in
construction, maintenance, or operations of City lands and facilities, in exchange for
naming rights.
2. GUIDELINES
It is the policy of the City of Redwood City to consider public requests for naming of
City-owned land and facilities, by following the procedures as set forth below.All public
requests for naming of city-owned land and facilities shall be reviewed in light of the
following considerations:
a. Naming which reflects the City's ethnic and cultural diversity;
b. Naming which enhances the values and heritage of the City of
Redwood City and that will be compatible with community interest;
c. Naming which recognizes distinct geographic, environmental, or
other prominent geographic features, which provide easy and
recognizable local reference points for the City's residents and users;
d. Recognition and honoring of individuals who have made significant
civic contributions to the Redwood City community or of historical
significance;
e. Naming as early in the capital planning and development process as
possible; and
f. Sponsorship through significant funding support from private donors
for the construction and/or ongoing maintenance and operations of
City lands and facilities in exchange for naming options.
REV: 08-02-16 FF
