CHAPTER 1 | MOBILItY
25
GOALS
• Promote a transit system along El Camino Real that serves as a viable alternative to the automobile, par-
ticularly for those without access to a vehicle and those looking to travel along the Corridor.
• Provide a seamless link between regional transit service providers and the rest of the city’s transportation
system.
StRAteGIeS
1M Encourage operational changes, such as more
frequent bus service and the installation of floating
bus stops, to help SamTrans buses run more effi-
ciently on the El Camino Real Corridor.
1N Ensure that any changes to the El Camino Real
right of way (such as allocating space to protected
bikeways) do not hinder transit vehicle mobility
and boarding. See also strategies under Section 1.2,
Bicycling.
1O Enhance bus stops along El Camino Real to include
benches and schedule information at a minimum,
and potentially additional amenities, such as shel-
ters, lighting, and real-time bus arrival information.
1P As feasible, supplement current transit service
with more localized shuttles and buses, such as a
Redwood City-specific “urban circulator” and/or
shuttles provided by other institutions, businesses,
or organizations (e.g. Stanford Marguerite); and
extend this service to all or part of El Camino Real.
“Floating” bus stops can minimize conflicts
between bicycles and transit vehicles.Source: lamag.comSource: chattanooga.govAn urban circulator provides free or low-cost
transit for short trips in a specific area.
Refer to Section
2.3, Marketing, for
strategies pertaining to
wayfinding/signage to
transit facilities.
