REDWOOD CITY EL CAMINO REAL CORRIDOR PLAN
48
SectION 3.3
cHILD c ARe FAcILItIe S
CONTEXT
As discussed in the previous sections, residential develop-
ment is occurring along El Camino Real, and more will occur
in the future. Child care availability and cost is a critical
problem facing many families and can significantly add to
the cost of living. Partnership Redwood City, the City’s com-
munity benefits program, lists on-site child care as a public
benefit that can qualify developers to request increases in
density or height, changes in use, or other accommodations.
WHY INCREASE CHILD CARE
OPPORTUNITIES?
Community members have consistently voiced a need for
additional child care options. Providing child care close to
where people live or work not only provides convenience for
families, but it reduces reliance on automobiles, and can be
an attractive amenity to draw prospective and retain existing
workers, renters, and/or buyers.
ADDItIONAL INFORMAtION
Redwood City also conducted a Child Care Supply Gap Study and Facilities Shortage analysis that concluded the City
needs more childcare facilities to meet the needs of the growing community. This report can be found on the Redwood
City website at www.redwoodcity.org/residents/child-care.Source: Ryan Sparks, United States AirforceSource: Raquel Sanchez, United States Airforce
