<br />CITY OF REDWOOD CITY <br />SEPTEMBER 1980 <br /> <br />,.. <br /> <br />POLICE OFFICER TRAINEE <br /> <br />DEFINITION <br /> <br />Under close supervision, to receive training in law enforcement and crime <br />prevention and to develop the necessary knowledge, skills and ability <br />which will prepare an employee in this class for the position of Police <br />Officer. <br /> <br />DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS <br /> <br />The Police Officer Trainee receives training in the Police Department and <br />at a basic P.O.S.T. academy to qualify for the position of Police Officer. <br />The employee's qualifications to be a probationary Police Officer are <br />determined by successful performance during the basic P.O.S.T. academy <br />training and any training conducted through the Police Department. A <br />police officer in training is in a training status and does not perform <br />police duties. <br /> <br />EXAMPLES OF DUTIES <br /> <br />Training may include instructions in the following: Criminal investiga- <br />tion, law of arrest, criminal law, laws of evidence, community relations, <br />juvenile procedures, traffic control, criminal identification, patrol <br />procedure, report writing, police organization and administration, fire- <br />arms use, philosophy of law enforcement, first aid, physical fitness and <br />defense techniques. <br /> <br />REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES <br /> <br />Good general intelligence; ability to carry out complex oral and written <br />instructions; ability to learn to analyze problems and take effective <br />action in police related matters; ability to learn to use a firearm and <br />defensive techniques; ability to learn to observe events and emergency <br />situations and retain details; ability to learn to perform all the duties <br />required of a Police Officer; excellent physical health and condition. <br /> <br />TRAINING, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE <br /> <br />Education: Completion of 30 units of college with a minimum grade point <br />average of 2.0. <br /> <br />ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS <br /> <br />4. <br /> <br />Twenty-one years of age at the time the application for employment is <br />received; weight in proportion to height; eyesight 20-70 uncorrected, <br />and 20-30 corrected, with freedom from color blindness; normal hearing; <br />ability to successfully complete a psychological, character and background <br />review is required; excellent physical health. <br /> <br />"EXHIBIT A" <br />
