<br />September 16, 1987 <br /> <br />Ms. Susan Case <br />Senior Assistant City Attorney <br />Office of City Attorney <br />202 Marshall Street <br />Redwood City, CA 94063 <br /> <br />Dear Ms. Case: <br /> <br />We have applied and requested the cancellation of the <br />Williamson Act contract under Section 51282(b) of the Government <br />Code which states that the cancellation is in the public interest. <br /> <br />The following conditions make the agricultural use of our <br /> <br />properties no longer feasible: <br /> <br />1. Urbanization on all sides of the property makes <br />growing difficult because of the dust, noise and <br /> <br />irrigation overflows. Adjacent residences complain <br /> <br />about this. Urbanization also has increased theft, <br /> <br />vandalism, and trespassing on our properties. <br /> <br />2. Our energy costs for heating and lighting our greenhouses <br /> <br />has increased substantially over the past ten years. In <br /> <br />1976 our P. G. & E. bills would average approximately <br />$1,500 per month. In 1986 the average was over $6,000 <br /> <br />... <br /> <br />per month. <br /> <br />3. Fertilizers, sprays, labor and plant costs have increased <br /> <br />over 200% in ten years, while competition from import <br />flowers has increased dramatically.
